Til Death Do Us Part

This represents my heart, big and grand; and it’s yours forever
because you are my friend. We’ve been together now for
fifteen years. We’ve had lots of laughs, and shed many tears.
When I consider all you’ve been to me during this time, I think
of the excellent wife Solomon describes. You are worth more
to me than fine jewels; and for you I’d give up all of my wood-
working tools. Happy is the man with a quiver full of children.
You’ve certainly given me that; and they’re worth more than a
million. I try to teach the kids Bible, from the knowledge in my
head, and that isn’t very smart; because you’re the one who
shows them Jesus by the love in your heart. You always try to
keep my hopes up when things are going bad. You’ve
struggled to take the place of my mom and my dad. Yes my
darling, I give you my whole heart. And I hope we’re together
til death do us part.

6-15-89

This is the 1st poem I ever wrote that I thought
was worth keeping. I framed it on a red back-
ground in a beautiful Lacewood, heart-shaped
picture frame and presented it to my wife on
our 15th anniversary. I couldn’t read it, and she
couldn’t listen without tears in our eyes. I wrote
it six months after our separation, with hope,
while I sat on the fence and waited to see which
way our relationship would go. All the while I
was working on me. The poem was formatted
in a heart shape.
