Sharing
Two people take an early walk
each on their own street side.
Thoughts of nature, beauty, humanness,
flow through their cluttered minds.
In America we keep us separate
from all things we do not know.
Unshared so much gets wasted.
Many experiences remain untold.
To the other's side I'll cross,
tell my story, give my name.
A friendship might be kindled
if the other does the same.
Openly communicate thoughts and feelings
once a friendship has begun;
and when things differ from heart to heart
there's no need to turn and run.
Why must we eat alone
at a table fit for four,
or turn the other way in silence,
or face the elevator door?
If we will share our empty space,
tell our stories, give a smile,
we'll shine light in deep, dark corners
making all of life worthwhile.
