The Sequestered Heart

Walls, at right angles, built from wrong moves,
surround this failing heart.
Insulating and suffocating, they aim to
subjugate any new emotions.
There is barely room for each paltry,
still entreating, beat.
A windowless and doorless puzzle box
with welded corners, it obscures all
faltering designs of escape.
Sticks and stones may break bones,
but lies will break a heart and sequester it.
Was this pulse poaching prison
induced by fear and for protection
by the owner by way of recent memory
or cast inward by the jealousy
of a controlling yet insecure suitor?
Whatever the source, the question
that begs answering is time.
How long before this sequestered heart
surrenders its remaining will and perishes?
