HAD I BUT KNOWN

Photobucket

Strange how we can go through life
Feeling we are so much alone
Never seeing that hand reaching out
My dear, somehow if I had known

I carried your picture in my heart
From the time that I was small
I didn't have very much to give
But I would gladly have given it all

You, it seemed, were miles away
Going from here to there
I was just the little girl lost
With tangled ribbons in her hair

The girls all smiled when you went by
Each one wishing they would be the one
Yet you weren't looking, so it seems
Just walking in the noon day sun

One day I chanced to pass you
In the meadow in our town
I was so in awe of you
I turned back to look around

When I was turning back, it seems
That you were doing the same
You smiled and gave a little wave
Not even knowing my name

For years that was the story
Then one day when I was grown
You stopped by my porch one day
As I swung there all alone

You said hello and reminisced
Of when I was a little girl
With hair that blew in the wind
That sometimes would just twirl

Imagine that! You noticed me
And I asked if you still walked alone
You said that yes indeed you did
For you never found the place called 'Home'

I asked you to come sit a while
You did and it was just the beginning
We wed not many months from then
Our love story never will have an ending
