A Knight to remember
Sir Thomas was a knight of old,
his men well trained and fed.
His courage they would not see fold,
from the front he always led.
Mid-journey they stopped in a glade,
to feed and rest the mounts.
To their horse’s needs attention paid,
returned on many counts.
As they sat and chatted then,
the knight sat bolt upright.
His men watched silent when,
he listened left and right.
‘Pray continue with your meal,’
he said and wandered off.
‘This wood has a certain feel...’
and he gave a quiet cough.
The coughing noise was low,
but was actually a sign.
Very quietly and slow,
his horse left the tethered line.
As he and the horse were clear,
he turned and said, ‘Good lad,
in this forest I sense fear,
and a presence that’s quite bad.'
Together then they walked,
between the many trees.
Whenever Thomas talked,
it was quiet and with ease.
‘My friend I don’t feel right,
‘it’s a feeling you might share.
Save yourself now and take flight,
and observe things from the air.’
No horse within a minute,
but in a tree ahead.
A falcon landed in it,
all-seeing eyes within it’s head.
A moan came from close by,
the knight moved on with stealth.
He could hear a maiden cry,
but she sounded in good health.
With sword drawn Thomas walked,
more slowly than before.
He felt just like he’d been stalked,
and it chilled him to the core.
From all around him witches came,
and surrounded him complete.
Then he heard that cry the same,
a witch with maiden’s cry did cheat.
One witch then cackled hoarsely,
‘You’ll do nicely as our slave.’
Then they talked about him coarsely,
as they led him to their cave.
He’d made no effort to defend,
himself from being caught.
In this way he would pretend,
and use the time that he’d bought.
They placed him in a cage,
in the darkness of their cave.
To him this was a stage,
to see if someone he might save.
The witches danced around,
sang of things to him they’d do.
Then came a wingbeat sound,
into the cave a falcon flew.
On the bird they cast a spell,
and it fell onto the floor.
They thought that they’d done well,
as they headed out the door.
Where the falcon fell, a noise,
knight assumed his friend was dead.
But the spell had given voice,
a naked girl stood there instead.
‘Knight forgive me I am sorry,
I’ve done all that I could.
My name is Princess Dorrie,
I had to get back to this wood.’
Their first spell made me a horse,
that could change into a bird.
But you know that now of course,
though it still sounds quite absurd.’
‘Because your capture is forbidden,
you will not stay here their slave.
And I can give you treasures hidden,
beneath the surface of this cave.’
‘Something else to you I give,
is my body, soul and heart.
Let’s take their treasures now and live,
when from here we both depart.’
