The Run Away

It happened one beautiful winter night…For Poet’sChoice: Host: Starlight1

So cold, she walked the lonely streets…
No money to buy herself something to eat…
Pulling her thin jacket tighter around her,
trying to shield her body from the cold wind of winter,
a tear trickled down her cheek, warm, against her cold skin.
She tried to make sense of this..how did it begin?
Was it her fault? No! No! That could not be!
He was her father..wasn’t he?
How could he have done such a terrible thing to her?
A father is supposed to love, not hurt, his daughter!
She wondered if her mother knew why she ran away?
How could she ever face her if they met again one day?
Crying, hungry, cold, and so alone,
Down the street she saw a mission from which a light shone.
Trying the door, she found that it was open.
Inside, crouching down in a seat by the door, she realized someone had spoken.
The lady said, “Come my child. Let’s get you fed and warm,
then you can tell me why you’ve wondered from your home.
Filled with fear and shame, yet feeling safe, the girl let the lady wrap her in a blanket.
When a steaming bowl of stew was set before her, she did not have to be forced to eat it.
Warm and drowsy from food and heat, she began to tell her story,
nestled in the loving arms of the kind hearted lady.
The lady said, “ My dear, you have nothing of which to be ashamed.
Many young girls have suffered, like you, this same kind of pain.
You must hold your head up high and pray to God for guidance.
You must tell your Mother, and this man must be punished.
“What if she doesn’t believe me?” asked the girl.
The lady said, “Honey, it takes faith to get us through this old world.”
And so they called her Mother, who cried with joy that she’d been found.
She did not doubt her story, and vowed to keep her safe and sound.
And so it happened one beautiful winter night..
A life was changed in a moment of fright,
and changed again by a beckoning light.

“Dedicated to all young girls who have suffered at the hands of those they thought loved them.”
