Consumed by the Flames…Perhaps

In case anyone is counting, this is my 500th posting to the Starlite Cafe.

Consumed by the Flames…Perhaps

Picking through the remnants after the fire
that engulfed so completely
what was once our love.

Praying that the conflagration did not
consume every vestige of shared moments
and secrets revealed.

Is it possible that our combined production
of lusty heat was too much to be
contained by the size of our hearts.

Were we destined to be victims of a
spontaneous combustion that devoured every speck
of love like so much kindling?

The flash fire burned so brightly
yet never touched our skin.

The fuel that fed this insatiable beast
was layer upon layer of sweet words spoken
in only the softest whispers
and accepted as the binding medium of our lives.

We search painstakingly now for the
entrails of syllables and the odd couplet
that shall assure us that the blaze was just a flash over
and the pilot light of our love still burns.
