Santa said no

Santa said
No gifts for you
You’ve been bad
The whole year through

He said he kept a list
And he checked it twice
Found out I had been
Naughty
Instead of nice

I cried and begged
For just one gift
Just one present
Beneath the tree
He said no
And the fault
For that
Belonged to me

He said he delivers gifts
To those who are good
He’ll pass by my house
And not even
Think twice
All because
I was naughty
This year
Instead of
Being nice

I asked who told him
That I had been bad
I said that is untrue
Now
No gifts should they have

Someone was lying
Not telling the truth
Are you sure my name
Is not written
In your book

The book that says
Who has been naughty
Or nice
I think by mistake
My name
Was placed
On the wrong side

Could you check again?
Just one more time
I promise to be good
And not step out
Of line

I told him
I was sorry
For the bad things I did
Even though I forgot
What it was I did
That was wrong

He looked again
And said no he was right
I had been naughty
Instead of nice

So no gifts for me
Not even one
I wish Christmas
Was over
Finished
Just done

What do I have to look forward to?
you see
When I’ll have no gifts
Beneath
The tree

Others will laugh
Because they’ll know
For Christmas
I got nothing
But a lump of coal

I left this for Santa
there by the tree
hoping and praying
this letter he would see
and maybe think twice
before he left my house
and maybe feel quilty
for leaving me out
