Roaring Silence over Dinner

We sat across the table
each pushing food around the plate,
hoping we would be able
to salvage our relationship on this date.

The atmosphere was conducive,
in the background soft music played.
Why were the words so damned elusive
and the emotions so uncomfortably frayed?

Our eyes met over flickering candles,
uncertainty danced freely in the flames.
We’ve both taken our chances and gambles,
never knowing all the rules to the games.

We were hoping the wine would soften the mood
and help to shape the words to be said.
Hurt feelings can form their own interlude
from which hurtful dialog may be fed.

I tried to speak but the sound gagged in my throat
as your fork tinked on fine china dinnerware.
A single tear formed on your cheek as you tried to emote
but verbalization just dissipated into thin air.

How long can we abide the deafening silence
before the cracks become chasms wide?
Without words there can be no compliance
as we both sat there dining on our pride.
