WAITING
Quietly, sitting apart from the rest, he waits
Eyes always wondering back to people coming and going
Young and old in different states
Friendly smiles from most in the room
Pain evident,
Some can’t hide their gloom
Cheerful volunteers, some survivors,
Stop to talk or bring a cup of coffee,
Wearing red aprons and Wings emblems, proud of their endeavors
As he sits waiting impatiently for the doctor or nurse to call him,
Surrounded by the hustle and bustle of people seeing doctors, taking treatments,
He suddenly realizes that he is one of them.
No longer is his life his own.
He, like most of them, is forever tied to a chemo treatment.
No vacations for he cannot go far from home.
Always the uncertainty,
When will the nausea and vomiting start?
Will there be any?
How long before he begins to lose weight,
Becoming skin and bones like some he sees here?
Calendar always filled with appt. dates
But as these things run through his mind,
He counts his blessings…….
Remembering the 16 years between now and the first time.
Back then, they took out the tumor and a kidney.
No treatment afterward, no radiation!
For 16 years, he was cancer free.
How much more blessed could you want to be??
