The Bridge

You may have heard of Sydney Harbour
and seen pictures of its might.
Have you seen the bridge they build across
this harbour, blue and bright?

There's a story of its opening,
Captain Francis DeGroot on his steed,
thought the occasion demanded so much more
or so the History books read.

Now, while Jack Lang, the premier wanted the glory
DeGroot thought it merited 'royal'
so when plans were made public to open the bridge
DeGroot was resolved he would spoil.

Speeches were made and to Lang went the glory.
DeGroot was enraged, or so goes the story.
He charged on his steed, waving his sword
and got there before Lang, cutting the cord!

They grabbed him and parcelled him to the 'psych ward'.
You just can't ride about town, waving your sword.
So the next time you see Sydney's bridge on the Quay
spare a smile for DeGroot and a chuckle for me!
