The lights went out

He looks at me
With a blank stare
He doesn’t know me
He is unaware
That I am his daughter
His flesh and blood

I watch helpless,
as he sheds a tear.
Alzheimer's is stealing,
My father away,
and he grows worse,
Each passing day.
he needs help,
With all his care,
from getting dressed,
To combing his hair

He’s still my father,
Who’s sitting there.
It's still his eyes,
His face, his hair.

It's still his body,
But it's just a shell,
of the father,
That I once knew so well.
He’s still my father,
Who looks at me,
then asks the question,
'Who might you be?'

When he forgets my name
Deep in my heart
I feel the pain
I know it’s not his fault
He forgets
This disease has taken
His mind away
Each day
He slips further
Away

He looks so sad
There is that chair
Lost in space
As he sits there
And stares

I ask him dad
Are you alright
He looks at me
With tear filled eyes
And says today
You my daughter
I recognize

I know these days
I forget many things
And deep in my heart
The pain
It stings

He says
I once knew everything
And I was there for you
Now it seems
We have exchanged
Our shoes

You now walk
Where I once did
Taking care of me
In the days ahead

The road were now traveling on,
Is long and tiresome too
But please know
I appreciate you

Though at times
I can’t recall your name
In my heart
My love for you
Remains

Taking care of dad
Is not always
An easy thing
To do

There are days,
When I just want to break down,
And howl,
to give up completely,
To throw in the towel,
But I hold my head high,
And I push my way through.
I have too much to give to him,
And so much to do

And I make a vow that,
Though it'll be hard,
I'll go on with a smile,
And play every card.
I'll give all I can,
To help him through
He’s my dad
What else could I do?

He did it for me
I’ll do it for him
I will stand beside him
Until the end

I love him
More than words
Can say
It breaks my heart
Knowing
Alzheimer’s took his mind
Away
