The Great Lover
These have I loved ......
A child's ringing laughter while at play
The clean smell of new cut hay
The ever-changing leaves upon the trees
The fresh smell of a mountain breeze
The sight of cars parading down the street
The pleasant sound of a baby's toddling feet
The trees that are resting by a brook
The movies - a new exciting book
The ticking of the clock upon the shelf
The pleasant times spent being by myself
The beauty of a flower that's in bloom
The look of happiness upon a bride and groom
The cleanliness of rain - the rainbow in
the sky
Tears sliding down my face - the smell of
roses before they die
The quiet joy of strolling through a park
The satisfied feeling from sitting in the dark
Music - the toys I played with when I was
small
Smiling at friends across the wide dance
hall
New dresses - the smell of wind-blown
clothes
The ocean - wondering where she goes
My family and the oneness that we
share
My church and kneeling at the alter
there
The awareness of God - the beauty of the
earth
All these have I loved since my birth
And as I grow - the things I love will
change
These other things may soon even
seem strange
In their places new things will appear
New faces - new sights - new sounds to
hear
And some while thinking of this may
be sad
But in my heart I know that I am
glad
For each new experience leads us on
To better things. Why cry for those things
gone?
And this my last wish shall be
That when I cross into eternity
I will not mourn for things of the past
For heavenly things are the ones that
last
So when I'm gone, I ask this of you,
please
Simply say - 'She loved all of these'
Then cast your eyes to Heaven above
And say - 'But even still she loves'
* these are things that matter................
penned by Mary Anne Simerly at the age of
15 as a project to do in Senior English. I
do not recall (and am I ashamed) of the
man who wrote his version of this and
it was his version that our teacher loved.
She wanted to see what our version would
be. Thus written the summer of 1952 -
I was 15 then and am 71 now. Smiles.
Aren't old memories worth their weight
in gold? I found this the other day -
had thought for years I had lost it.
I am so blessed that didn't happen.
Truly blessed ....
I got 100 - A+ - smiles. She liked it so
much that she said it was the best poem
she had ever had from a student and she
would love to get it published. What a
joy and what an inspiration she was in my
young life to start those wheels turning.
If she liked it...perhaps I could write more
that others would like. Of course, I had
started writing at the age of 8 ...but, looking
back ... this was the beginning. I hope you
enjoyed it.

You are a child of the universe
No less than the moon and the stars
That is why I chose you, love
To write what we'd call 'OURS'
