Knowing the Difference

There’s a spot in
everyone’s heart
where empathy
lives silently.
While other lives
are falling apart
this spot holds
them tenderly.

When you watch
the evening news
and see the
horrors perpetrated,
no matter how staunch
your views
empathy pours forth
unabated.

Empathy means
you share their pain
because you’ve
known their ache.
Sympathy rides an
altogether different train,
it’s a distinction
many can’t make.

Both are emotions
riding different rails,
only scar tissue
knows the difference.
Once you’ve sampled
similar travails
you can’t sit emotionless
on that fence.
