MY DREAM
Sharing another found poem. I hope you enjoy it.
I was a senior in high school when I wrote this.
I wonder why I save all this stuff. My mother no doubt saved them first
and they came back to me after she died. I'm still holding on to them.
Kind of silly I suppose but they do bring back some fond memories.
This poem was written in 1961 and included with my essay
For the 1961 Apple Blossom Cotillion Competition...The Apple Blossom
is our local debutante ball. Every girl should experience at least one.
It puts the shine and polish on the word LADY.
MY DREAM
I’m just a “Plain Jane,” an ordinary girl
but every girl has her dreams;
perhaps it comes from story books
about princesses and queens,
Prince Charming on his big white stead
coming to rescue you
and like every girl just growing up
I have my dreams too.
I think someday when I’m all grown up
and I am out of school,
I’ll be a teacher and be a writer
and I’ll get married too
and raise a lovely family;
six children would be good
and we’ll live on a little family farm
at the edge of the woods.
We’ll grow vegetables in our garden
and pick wild berries growing there,
I’ll read books and write them stories
and teach them to say their prayers.
We’ll play games together
and have picnics in the yard
and I’ll teach in a country school
and I will work real hard
to make a difference
in someone else’s life
and I will be a loving, caring,
honest, gentle wife.
We will work together
to have everything we need,
at least this is what I hope for;
this is my girlhood dream.
I’ll grow myriads of flowers
and I’ll keep the house real clean.
My husband, he will be my king
and I will be his queen.
We will be a very happy family
together all our life.
My dream, to teach, to write and be a mother
and somebody’s loving wife.
It’s my dream. I’ll make it happen.
All I need is the right tools
and the will to keep on trying,
but first I need to finish school.
