AND EARTH REJOICED

This morning, wakened before the dawn
with chilling cold, so damp and still,
not one twitter, not one bird trilled
as fog hovered over street and lawn,
a morning gray, without a song.
Oh for some ray of hope I seek,
then clouds split above the mountains high
and Earth's voice was lifted to the sky,
so joyous that the storm had ceased
and I rejoiced and knew sweet peace
as sunshine smiled upon the day,
a sign it seems, a smile from God,
then came the lifting of the fog
and the lifting of my heart in praise
this morning at the break of dawn,
at last, long last, the storm was gone.
Hearts sang resplendent in one voice.
The sun smiled down. The Earth rejoiced.
