Some Noise

We bought him blocks
and coloring books
and legos by the score
He had two dozen match box cars
and GI Joes galore.
But those are toys for kids
who play well by themselves
The kind who watch TV alone
and look at picture books
while Mom is on the phone.
My son was not a quiet child
he liked to hear some noise
He loved a train that played a tune
A train you had to closely watch
in case it stopped too soon.
He had a toy that barked and mooed
and a xylophone and drum
But when it came to having fun
he had a toy that he preferred
one perfect for my son.
In the big drawer beneath the stove
he found Mom's pots and pans
He looked so funny sitting there
a colander atop his head
covering up his hair.
He banged together two big pots
and laughed aloud with glee
We listened to his symphony
as proud as we could be
his grandmother and me.
