Goodbye 'Jacko'

In time we get the chance,
to tackle life head on.
Mainly due to song and dance,
for you that chance was gone.

Hiding in the shadows friend,
was not your choice to make.
Childhood saw an early end,
which wasn’t your mistake.

The limelight you enjoyed,
performing with your brothers.
Pure genius you employed,
entertaining others.

Your ability and joy,
was there for all to see.
But a normal growing boy,
you would never be.

I was older by six years,
and watched you from afar.
Our lifestyles and careers,
me normal – you a star!

Full of envy as I grew,
and watched your style improve.
Sometimes wishing I could do,
any single ‘Jacko’ move.

From teens to present man,
I’ve listened to your songs.
I’ve been a lifelong fan,
though never joined the throngs.

Your life so full of highs,
the way you made folk feel.
You created summer skies,
your enthusiasm real.

The scandals I’ll forget,
each season through each year.
It’s achievements I will let,
recall your great career.

Reclusive times will not,
get a second glance.
Thanks to you we’ve got,
a unique song and dance.

Throughout your life you stayed,
a boy within the man.
So heavily you’ve paid,
with your short lifespan.

No sweet escape for you,
no quiet bow in glory.
Some will do what they must do,
to taint your magic story.

Overstepping race and creed,
your work appealed to all.
I think you’ve earned your place,
as a legend you’ll stand tall.

Sad though now you’ve gone,
from warm and sunny days.
Your achievements will live on,
you were more than just a craze.
