Childhoold Reflections

Childhood Reflections

The reflections of a childhood
Those simpler times gone by
Bring a wistful smile to my face
And nostalgic tears to my eyes

Remembering with such fondness
When the world made perfect sense
A time when someone was always there
Offering their gentle guidance

When your neighbors were really friends
Not people you should avoid or fear
And schools were filled with laughter
Not the violence of which we hear

It was a time when innocence ruled
When tricycles held colored streamers
We believed moons were made of cheese
And stars were hung for dreamers

When running to the backyard slide
And losing that game of chase
Mattered to us not one bit
Because it was never about the race.

Are these only illusions of a childhood
That was so very precious to me
Or are they heartfelt wishes
Of what I would like the future to be

As I wipe those tears from my eyes
I realize the enormous cost
Today's children do not know the freedom
Or the innocence that's been lost

My wistful smile has saddened, recalling
All the good times that have been
Because I know that those yesterdays
Will never come our way again.
