Another Morning Spent At Sunrise Mall

So here it is, a hot July morning,
And I, with nothing better to do
Than to be sitting here,
Alone,
At Sunrise Mall.
The mall is pretty much deserted now,
Since they built that big deluxe mall, over there, in Roseville,
Designed for the rich people,
And the families that have plenty of
Discretionary spending money.
Now it’s just us old folks
Sitting here, drinking Starbucks coffee,
Missing our favorite stores,
Like Mervyn’s,
That have moved out.
Yes, Old folks, we are,
People watching.
If you’re wanting to celebrate life,
I can think of a better place to be doing it,
Than to be sitting here, in a dying mall.
Even the juvenile big straps with attitudes are missing.
But over there, suddenly, is a harried mom
Who is urging her toddler to hurry,
Her arms laden with packages.
Good, I think. Somebody bought something. There’s still hope.
Probably bought toddler clothes, around size 2, I’m thinking
And perhaps, an impulse purchase of a bottle of perfume
For herself.
Poor little one,
His little legs are pumping, just as fast as they can,
And yet, still, she urges him on..
I grin, when the kid suddenly sits down.
Sits down.
Flat on his little bottom.
No warning,
He just plopped right down.
Right smack down in the middle of the floor.
Take THAT, mama, I giggle.
Oooh, I love that look on that poor mother's face.
I’m looking at the old lady,
Sitting on the opposite bench
Who is looking at me,
And we nod, and we smile.
Well, the day is swiftly passing,
And it’s about time for my afternoon nap
And my poor old dog is waiting.
I pick up my bag filled with four See’s Bordeaux Chocolates,
Reach for my cane,
And head for home,
Another hot July morning, gone.
