Out Of The Ashes

If I'd have looked closely I'd have seen
Ours was a love never meant to be.
You were not the settling-down type.
A part of you wanted only to be free.

Free as the birds to fly at will.
Free as the softly falling rain.
I know from the ashes of heartbreak
I will arise triumphant again.

Deep in the corners of my heart,
I think I knew all along.
You were like a bird locked in a cage
Wanting freedom, and to sing your own song.
