Ending At Infinity

Crumbling walls
of yesterday's magnificent castles
form minute mounds
from which desperate waves,
in an effort to escape,
systematically
claw at the battlements,
undermining,
scouring,
scourging...
until, finally
they collapse.
Escaping moisture
causes small, submerged shellfish,
to gasp in tiny bubbles.

Somewhere, far removed
and many miles out to sea;
starting at forever,
the ocean exudes a mighty groan.
Swell on swell,
crest on crest,
set on set,
potential breaker
upon potential breaker,
whole families of waves;
some wearing dainty white lace caps,
some mighty transparent tubes
abounding with marine life,
all...all make their way,
eventually,
to gather,
saluting the shore line.

Immature wavelets,
exhibiting farouche social behaviour,
wantonly escape,
to fizzle out in gay ripples
with sibilant sighs
on golden sand,
then play hide-and-seek
in rock pools
and sand castles of tomorrow,
before returning to the depths
where older siblings
engage in more mature games,
ending at infinity.
