My Aching Back

The grey has invaded
my eyebrows
as the ensuing days
go racing past.
To age my reluctant
body kowtows,
I know it happens,
only not so fast.
My state of my mind is
much younger,
a raconteur still lives
on in there.
For a good night’s sleep
I sorely hunger,
but R.E.M. and I are not
on the square.
It would be more efficient
these days
counting what doesn’t hurt
not what does.
When my back goes out
that’s where it stays
and without these glasses
the world’s a fuzz.
If it sounds as though
I’m complaining
more than an aging man
has the right,
you’d be correct but I’ll
go on feigning
that I’m vibrant until
I lose the light.
