My Hero

When Oprah Winfrey gave away some cars
She made some people scream
Some fell faint, then there were those
Who felt they were in a dream

When Ty Pennington of HGTV comes around
He beckons a family, 'wake up, come outside'
Then tears their old house down and replaces it
He searches for those 'in need' far and wide

To many, this would be considered generous
It also makes for a very good show
But when it comes to being generous in spirit
Let me tell you about my hero

He was born Jesus, the son of Mary
Gifts were brought by three traveled wise men
'Twas a miraculous conception, at the very least
That night in a little town called Bethlehem

He became a teacher and preacher of sorts
With his twelve disciples at his side
A humble man wearing a robe and sandals
His plight ne'er to be denied

He fed the hungry, raised the dead
Helped a blind man to once again see
Befriended the lepers, spread the love
Of our maker for you and for me

To anyone who would dare to listen
Sowing the word of God everywhere
A simple man with no agendas to hide
Then gave His life for the sins we bear

That, one day, all men could walk with God
He lugged a wooden cross through the streets
With a crown of thorns placed on his head
To it, he was nailed through His hands and feet

So for me, when I think of a generous spirit
Jesus Christ would win hands down, by far
For God's love to dwell in our hearts and souls
Is better than a house or a car.
