Koala

It's hard to think they all might go,
those icons of Australia;
since invasion numbers declined,
conservation schemes a failure.

What could possibly be the threat
to koala population?
This precious creature, cuddly and soft,
what a blow to civilisation .

Feral creatures attack and maim,
vehicle collisions fatal;
diseases decimate as humans spread,
even tiny koalas, pre-natal.

In ancient times the People
used fire to regenerate land;
but senseless arson causes mass destruction,
we don't seem to understand.

Chlamydia killing thousands
could well be the final straw;
all the result of pollution
which we close our eyes and ignore.
