Hermit Crabs

See how, along the ocean floor,
in crevices and cracks,
creep multitudes of hermit crabs,
with houses on their backs.

Abandoned shells and borrowed,
multi-coloured, dull and bright;
shells which glow in nacre tones
when held up to the light.

Sometimes a tiny shell is home
which crab's bulk fails to fit.
Be sure he'll move before too long,
lest shell should break and split.

They dance together on the sand,
testing surrounds with claws;
miss-matched in all their mufti gear
and do it...just because.
