He Bows His Head To Pray

Chorus:
Hunkered down behind mounds of sand
His dreams seem so very far away
The soldier fighting for a cause
He bows his head to pray

The night skies lit with missiles
Meant to maim or to destroy
Everything this person stands for
Our American hometown boy

A camaraderie of mere youngsters
Many under the age of twenty-one
They've had to grow up very fast
Underneath this blazoned sun

Dust storms swirling round and round
Their throats are parched and dry
In dread heat of the moment
They watch their buddies die

Chorus:
Hunkered down behind mounds of sand
His dreams seem so very far away
The soldier fighting for a cause
He bows his head to pray

When his Mama is sick at home
Or his girlfriend has gone astray
These thoughts weigh on his mind
Sure not to make his day

Aware that if he dwells too much
He'll let his fellow troops down
So he puts up a wall around his heart
To make it safely through a town

Reconnaissance is a priority
Mortars blasting the morning air
Gives credence to life everlasting
Land mines are hidden everywhere

Chorus:
Hunkered down behind mounds of sand
His dreams seem so very far away
The soldier fighting for a cause
He bows his head to pray

The day has come for him to return
For some this brings a peace of mind
For others they are tortured
Thinking of their buddies left behind

Long nights in lonely silence spent
With blood, sweat, pain and tears
Reflecting on a brotherhood of men
Their heartaches and their fears

All his memories keep dredging up
The horrors of his yesterdays
They will never cease, never fade
They'll be with him for always

Chorus:
Hunkered down behind mounds of sand
His dreams seem so very far away
The soldier fighting for a cause
He bows his head to pray
