Our Day of Reckoning

So touched by the first blush
Of her adolescent sweet smile
My baby girl was growing up
If only I could hold her awhile

But life has such bigger plans
She has to spread her wings and fly
To be all that she can become
I know I'll dread her first good-bye

I've been her guiding light for so long
I'll fear turning the parental switch off
I must if she's ever to make it by herself
My reasoning I pray she will never scoff

I see her as an independent woman
One who can do things on her own
Strong and self- motivated she is
Still I can't believe she's almost grown

Seems like only yesterday she was a baby
And I'd rock her to sleep in my arms
All her tomorrows will be filled with glee
Because I will protect her from all harms

I said I'd let her spread her wings to fly
And I will do this to my best of ability
But I am a mother foremost before all else
In case she falters, she can count on me
