Steady Eddie - Part 17
Desperate now the pirates were,
for vengeance for their mates.
One minute hostages are there,
then someone liberates...
The two marines of British stock,
moved swiftly thro' the grasses.
An easy run...they'd never walk,
protecting their young asses.
Mist was rising from the ground,
between the trees ahead.
Making poetry, the birdsong sound,
clearly in their head.
Eddie glanced at John and said,
'We'll head for that high ground.'
John was reassured by Ed,
so confident and 'sound'.
Unafraid to stand and fight,
from duty they'd not swerve.
On terrain that felt just right,
then justice they would serve.
Not an execution,
decided by these two.
Simply the solution...
'it's now all we can could do...'
Sure enough, not far away,
as dawn began to rise.
Treetops overhead gave way,
to blue Somalia skies.
Sounds of firing from behind,
wild shooting with no aim.
Pursuing pirates firing 'blind',
as on the pack still came.
The gradient got steeper,
as the lads got climbing.
Ed said, 'They'll face the Reaper...
if we control our timing...'
Thro' foliage, o'er rock and dust,
on went the gallant pair.
John stopped and said, 'I must,
see how many now are there...'
'Oops!' John cried, mates they've found,
it's time now to get ready.
It's such a reassuring sound...
your nickname...Steady Eddie...'
Bright sun rose beyond the mound,
to bathe land far and near.
The pirates on the lower ground,
the outcome was unclear.
*
No chopper there to see,
but both the lads could tell.
Team would not return to sea,
til' they were free as well...
In training they had felt,
they were taught enough.
Take the hand that's dealt,
get on with it...don't bluff.
The two then together lay,
only feet apart.
'Okay mate,' John heard Ed say,
'be careful once we start...'
'Just count your every shot,
so this will be our day.
We'll work as we've been taught,
no harm will come our way.'
John proud to have a friend,
like Ed...one of a kind.
It might look like their end,
but he wouldn't change his mind.
They both outstretched a hand,
and exchanged a cheeky grin.
The handshake was unplanned,
but both felt good within.
So beneath a summer sky,
the two young men awaited.
To win this day they'd try,
a fight the pirates had created.
*
Sudden, screaming, whining noise,
a chopper ripped o'erhead.
Team message to the boys:
'We're still around' it said.

to be continued...
