Earning Stars

Many a heart has been broken
Many a teardrop been cried
Many live lonely and sorry
Somebody's words hurt their pride

Like that girl who just had a baby
Without a father in sight
That the neighborhoods all shunned and avoided
They dubbed her a girl of the night

Like the old man who lives on the corner
He is dirty and ragged and mean
All the children laugh and point at him
They call him a name that's obscene

No one knows their true stories
Nobody gives a damn why
No hand is offered in friendship
It's too easy to scoff and decry

People who live in glass houses
Should be careful of stones that they throw
Tomorrow they might be a victim
There is no way you can know

Life has a way to get even
So the stones that you're casting today
Could turn out to not be a pebble
But a boulder that's headed your way.

I can tell you how to earn a gold star
To be set in your heavenly crown
Simply think each time you open your mouth
So your words won't bring somebody down
