My Old Home Town

I hadn't been there in so many years.
My old home town.
The street names were changed.
Some buildings torn down.

I recall the old Mercantile.
Hattie's store on the corner there.
Penny candy filled a whole sack.
Just a nickel's worth, to share.

Streets were lighted on holidays.
Store windows decorated with care.
A masterpiece of a Christmas tree.
Stood in the village square.

Ice skating on the river Christmas eve.
Church bells ringing at St. John's.
Today it's cement and asphalt.
That special ambiance is gone.

Thoughts drifting back,
Some mingled with tears.
Where did they go ,
All of those years?

Today they're fond memories.
A smile crosses my face.
I'm transported back in my mind,
To that wonderful place.
