A Chill of Autumn

I'm sitting on a plane
California bound,
recalling with absolute clarity
the absence of your smile,
and the way you kissed me
before going

I remember a chill of autumn
A configuration of leaves, gathering...
teary eyes
that brought a lump to my throat,
and a monopoly of words
that neither one of us
could speak

Seems like only yesterday
that we had something rare...
that we were the only two people
who couldn't see
how incredibly happy
we were
