Her Christmas Prayer

It's a great big scary world,
As seen through the eyes of a child.
And her daddy's so far away.
With her tiny hands folded,
She kneels down by the tree
And begins to pray;

***
Packages tied with bows and ribbons,
A small child kneels by the tree
And sends a Christmas prayer to Heaven.
Dear baby Jesus, can you hear me?

In the candlelight her tears glisten.
Please bring my daddy home for the holidays.
I don't need a new puppy or a new toy.
Those are the simple words she prays.

Mama's baking gingerbread cookies.
Send a Christmas angel to brush away her tears.
She's missing you at Christmas, too, Daddy.
And I really need you here.

Mama helped me hang the Christmas tree star.
When you were here, you'd always lend a hand.
Please Dear God, bring peace on earth.
Send my daddy home from that awful land.
*****
Her daddy didn't come home that Christmas.
She was too young to realize.
Her daddy was home way up in Heaven
Far beyond the bright blue skies.
