Loading Guns on Christmas Day

As they marched off into the horizon
Yes, they were hesitant, yet, not afraid
Hesitant ... for they missed us already
Still, this was the job for which they were paid

Hearts in hands as they had to say good-bye
Many wives lingered in their husband's arms
Not a dry eye on the tarmac that day
Prayers were being said to keep them from harm

A mere metaphor, marched into the sun
They'd flown off into the wild blue yonder
To a land of destruction and madness
Where they'd have no time to sit and ponder

A hell on earth it would have to be called
For nothing else could ever describe it
To survive, alert twenty-four seven
They walked not step by step but bit by bit

Knee deep in enemy territory
They couldn't tell who the enemy was
Many fell victim trusting the wrong ones
Unable to tell friends from foes the cause

Every precious second they had of peace
Their minds would be concentrating on home
On their wives, their parents, or their children
Some, if their fiancee's affections would roam

Their only joy was mail call or e-mails
And they thanked God for the Internet
For some, they saw their babies being born
What a time of jubilation and yet ...

Still such sadness, unable to hold them
But, upon this, they had no chance to dwell
Hunkered down somewhere in Afghanistan
Now their own personal and private hell

Some had lived, some had died and some had cried
If not openly, they did privately
Wet streaks running down dustiest of cheeks
Unable to hide pain or misery

It's Christmas time over in that country
Just like it is here but with exception
While we gather 'round a beautiful tree
They're loading their guns with ammunition

When we bow our heads in solemn prayer
Let us not forget our military
Ask that His light be their bright guiding star
And that Santa won't be scared or wary

Hopefully he will land his sleigh safely
And it's loaded with great gifts from back home
Foremost, faith, hope and love shall top the list
And much respect for the braveness they've shown

Merry Christmas To All Our Military Personnel
