Mesmerized
Mesmerized I was as a little girl
She'd talk to me of her younger days
I would hang on her every word
She meant the whole world to me
Beautiful and I think she knew it
Blond hair and pretty blue eyes
The baby she was of four siblings
And may have been a bit spoiled
There wasn't a thing she couldn't do
Oh how she loved to dance and sing
Even played a mean saxaphone too
I believe she was one of a kind
I remember the pictures she'd draw
Ladies in silhouettes and flowers
I'd sit and watch her work her magic
She was filled with artistic flair
But when our country called upon her
She gave up wearing her snazzy clothes
Working day shifts in a defense plant
She wore some old khacki overalls
She'd married a handsome man
He looked just like a movie star
(Does anyone remember Bob Cummings?)
But they split up during the war
He dumped her for someone new
But stories I loved the very best
Were how she and my daddy met
He was older and she didn't know
If she wanted to give him a chance
My daddy, he wooed and wooed her
He'd taken her to a bar for a drink
Kept buying her expensive cocktails
But she could hold her liquor well
She said he was trying to get her drunk
All it would have taken was two beers
But he didn't know it, drunk she never got
So they fell in love instead
Wanting a fresh start they moved away
Bought a shell home and it had no walls
They'd hung curtains to make the rooms
They worked hard and finally got it done
I came along and fourteen months later
She blessed him again with twins
The babies were so sick, so so tired was she
Still a great mother she always was
The rest is history and I remember it well
But oh how I loved those moments
When she'd share with me her younger days
She was truly quite a woman
