So Be It
God passed down the Law to Moses,
as told in the Book of Leviticus;
this is as it was meant to be,
the words remaining as a guide to us.
You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge
against the children of your people, but you shall love
your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD.
'And who might be your neighbour, Sir?'
the question oft arises,
the answer is... all those you meet,
simple, with no surprises.
A man once questioned Jesus
regarding intricate points of law,
asked which was the most important commandment
(he was hoping some points to score).
But Jesus, knowing the Law quite well,
spoke with authority;
not one but two he cited
so that all might informed be.
Loving God comes first and foremost,
a commitment which must be complete,
involving the whole of one's being,
with a love so perfect, so sweet.
The second commandment demands that you love,
selflessly, righteously, those in your sphere;
treat them as you'd have them treat you...
respect, generosity, trust and good cheer.
So, love thy neighbour as thyself,
not always easy to obey,
human nature makes us selfish
and we always seem to know a better way.
Yet these two directions, complete as they stand
will lead you to meet every other command.
