Self Defence

All living creatures come equipped
with in-built self protection
for when predatory enemies
approach in their direction.

Bright camouflage, sharp thorny spines,
strongly armed defensive shell
and sometimes, in the case of skunks,
a gross, repellent smell.

We humans too, have mechanisms
which we activate in defence,
pallisade, citadel, fortress,
a twelve foot chain mail fence?

Our automatic sensors detect
approach made by foe or friend,
though sometimes we are too reliant
and on faulty data depend.

Pull down the cone of silence,
activate in-built protection,
the keys to your new missile launcher
are now ready for collection.
