Were We Set Up? By Whom?

I knew of him, but didn't know him personally,
Our neighbor tried to get me to meet him.
I said, 'no, not interested' and wouldn't agree,
Chances of us getting together were slim.

We met by chance one night at mutual friend's home,
I was with my long time boy friend home on fur low.
Then second time we met at the very same house,
We were planning church picnic and I asked him to go.

He said, 'yes, because he thought it was date with me,
However I had a blind date and I ask him for a girl friend.
He then said, 'no he didn't like blind dates too well,'
He was at the church picnic alone, fate did append.

Next time we met some of my friends and I were walking,
This same guy came by and picked us up in his car.
They jumped in the back seat leaving no room for me,
I had to get in the front seat with the driver, a bit bizarre.

One day he showed up at my house with our mutual friend,
She had asked him to take her to the market shopping.
He told her only if she would go by my house and get me,
She was a bit perturbed by this extra unnecessary stopping.

Next time was in a strange way, I never did figure out,
Our mutual friends set up a drive inn movie date including me.
They were to meet at my house at a certain time one night,
This guy was taking us but our friends were absentees.

I was not allowed to go on dates with a guy alone,
So my parents took their car and followed us there.
Our first date and I had nothing to do with it really,
I was set up for sure and it was a strange snare.

Very often he would appear at my house door,
Then fate started pushing him in my direction.
I was waiting for my army boy friend to come back,
This was surely not of my own introspection.

He kept coming to my house, taking me to movies,
I didn't like the movies and I often slept through them.
He was there helping when dad became ill and died,
By this time I was wondering if I could get along without him.

He took mom and me to the hospital to see dad miles away,
We didn't drive and didn't know anyone to take us.
He drove us in the funeral procession in his car,
He took me to work when I was unable to catch the bus.

A flood came into our house not long after dad died,
Our furniture and rugs were ruined beyond repair.
My fiance had all the answers and took care of clean up,
Whenever I needed him , he was always there.

There were times we had to take care of his alcoholic dad,
Together we would visit them and do what ever we could.
There was no time or money for wine, roses and romance,
I had given his ring back several times thinking I should.

Before dad went to the hospital he told me to take care of mom,
He seemed to know he would not be coming home again.
Still not sure I wanted to get married so maybe my way out,
I told him I had to take care of mom, this was straining my brain.

Dad had also told me to marry this guy and have three kids,
I had always obeyed my parents and thought I must continue now.
My fiance told me he would also take care of my mom too,
So I had every reason to become committed to marriage vows.

He probably thought she would not live with us very long,
Twenty three years later she remarried and moved out.
Now over fifty five years later we are still together,
Will be until death do us part, I have no doubt.
