Wide River

We sat by the river,
he took my two hands
and we talked of our future,
exchanging gold bands.
Before we could settle
he must make his mark
so my sweetheart enlisted
then flew to Iraq.

Chorus: As the wide river wanders
its path to the sea
I wait for my darling,
my husband to be

It seemed like forever
and I missed him so;
oh why did I listen
and just watch him go?
I voiced no objections
and spoke not my heart;
it's so long my darling
that we've been apart.

Chorus: As the wide river wanders
its path to the sea
I wait for my darling,
my husband to be

And now it is over,
he's lost who was mine;
he and his buddy
set off a land mine.

Chorus: As the wide river wanders
its path to the sea
the waiting is finished,
love's not meant for me.
