Simply A Traveler

Simply A Traveler

Dear corners and crossroads,

I share with you the reminiscencings
of all my journeys....
life's experiences, winding ribbons
of obscure pathways,
fence-lined and litter-strewn
with many unclaimed souvenirs
of where I've been.

I often pause in my travels,
finding a park bench of hesitation,
that uncomfortable seat of reflection,
to look back upon the chaos of years
gone by, measured by unexpected turns,
and sharp corners demanding quick thinking.
I wonder about choices made...
if perhaps at times I mistook
fate's handiwork for my own bad decisions,
if the road I did not take or the door
I did not open would have changed me.
I ask myself if I perhaps spent too much
time daydreaming in the land of make believe
or sailing away on seas of reality, not giving
much credence to the balance of faith and truth.
How many times did I find myself
standing at the many crossroads of time,
each asking me to travel further, give more
than I thought I possibly could... and all for what?

Was it simply to find myself
at this place, sitting upon this very bench
in contemplation?
My gaze turns to those
once journeyed paths and I feel the breeze
of acceptance sweep across my soul,
whispering, always whispering...
'You didn't get here the easy way,
but you did get here YOUR way.'
No, it has not always been easy
but would I have really taken
the simpler paths?
I think not as my stubbornness
would have deemed such choices
as not an option.

I gather my thoughts
as time nudges me onward,
reminding me that though reflection is a fine thing,
there are also those moments that
should not be dwelled upon.
Too much of my life is still to come, still to be lived.
But as I begin the next chapter of this newest journey,
I want to send my thanks to you,
the roads passed by, the corners nearly missed,
and those unopened doors of the past,
for you all led me here and I am content.

Signed,
Simply a traveler

P. S. I will ask of you a favor though.
If you happen to see those bridges I crossed
could you thank them for me?
I burned so many of them along the way
that I think a third party 'thank you' might be best.
I am not sure how forgiving bridges are, after all.
