Lying in Wait

It lurks in the sea of mist and dreams
Entrapping souls of hunger and greed
Blinding you with magical lore
It tempts your spirit with silver and gold

It waits for those who envy and lust
Like a shark it watches its prey
Teeth as sharp as razor blades
And jagged claws shred your conscious

It creeps up on minds in sorrow and gloom
Stealing bits and pieces of your thoughts
Replacing your inner voice with its own
It mocks you for not knowing it’s there

It slips into the hearts of scorn and spite
Burying itself deep inside
Stripping you of all your love
Then withdrawing it watches you go insane

It comes to you in disregard
Wanting to break you down
Loving your company but bringing despair
Misery is always lying in wait
