Night Dreams

Once I was aquainted with long nights
On silvered seas where maiden moonbeams play
I've stood amazed when lilting summers breeze
Tucked stars in coverlet of cloud to dream each day

I too have heard the lonely night bird cry
Weeping for lost horizons oh so far
As I have gambled all my hopes... my dreams
While following the pathway of a distant star

I've watched zig zags of lighting rend black skies
Heard thunder. ..cannons shots ..burst though thin air
Rode roller coaster waves while they were tempest tossed
To reach some distant coast and find love there

Indeed, I've seen black velvet stroked by moon
White tipped with lacy fronds of foam
Heard sails creak..stiff canvas against mast
And prayed my God to bring me safely home

For when I reach the shore where love awaits
And see your face framed with the mornig sun
Oceans will fade as my old heart gives thanks
That like a pirate ...seafaring days are done

But....still there will be nights when I'll be one
Who longs to hear that anthem of the sea
When under straining cavas ..I set out
To share the lullaby sung by the whispering sea
