Loved You Enough

Loved You Enough
(for Mom and Dad)
Oh, that we could have loved you more
So that perhaps you might have stayed
Or challenged fate and thus implore
The gods, your departure delayed...
But no, for this is not the way
Of life and death and in between
For there are times we have no say
In what will be and what has been.
So we wept, we stood in silence
Reaching for our faith to guide us.
We bid you the sweetest goodbye
Knowing we would miss you so much...
But we gave you wings, let you fly
Because we had loved you enough.
written for the Just For The Love Of It Phrase challenge
a French sonnet using the given phrase: 'we stood in silence'
~~note~~
My parents died in 1994 within four months of each other and I had lost a brother at the end of '93 as well. As much as we would have loved to kept them here, each had been suffering for quite some time so though letting them go was not easy, we loved them enough to know that the time had come to give them wing... this is what inspired this piece as the anniversary of my father's death nears.
