Tom's Teddy Bear

I made this teddy bear for Tom,
my precious, darling boy;
not knowing what priceless treasure
could be found in a simple toy.

Teddy's body, tough tan canvas,
one floppy ear, one straight,
embroidered nose...black, satiny
and those googly eyes I hate.

When Tom was born, prognosis grim;
we knew he had limited years.
each moment we filled up, right to the brim,
full of laughter and joy...never tears.

Teddy's googly eyes watching over him...
Tom's soft little chuckles, such joy,
as he 'talked' in his way, to his best mate,
just a 'mum-manufactured' soft toy.

These eyes have seen the heart of purity
our Tommy took with him to meet with God.
Nine precious years we had of our boy's love
but never has he on this sweet earth trod.

Poor teddy bear...you sit there on the shelf.
I take you down and hug you...you're not wise.
You cannot see the wrenching grief I'm feeling;
you only saw him through those googly eyes.

Phrase:
These eyes have seen the heart of purity
