Leaving Ash Behind

Leaving Ash Behind

I've reached for you in memories
And held you close, bathed you with tears
Shed by love that through passing years,
Has felt the sting of lonely.

I've clothed you in togs of sorrow
But only for a moment brief.
I would not be a journey's thief
Because I knew that you must continue.

As must I... as I have been...
Though I must admit I have stumbled.
Into a dark abyss I've tumbled
When my dreams have turned to ash.

But even then I reached for you
In those times of weakened will
And felt you near, your presence still
As much a part of me as ever

And always there will be the memories
To help heal the hurt of lonely,
To stem the flow of bleeding sorrow.
Life, as must I, will continue
Though not as it had been.
I will burn bridges, leave ash
Behind me and I will remember you...
For there are those things that truly are forever.
