The Water's Edge of Baltimore

The Water's Edge of Baltimore

lt was Bullneck Road…
the water’s edge of Baltimore
where l grew up as a child

Sweet memories abound
of tall oak trees,
the distant shore of the Chesapeake Bay
and the reverberating sounds of Bethlehem Steel

The front porches of houses
were an afternoon venue
for gazing at the excursions of sailboats
and frolicking seagulls,
for sipping tall glasses of iced tea
and being shaded by an awning
in the haze of an afternoon sun

The MTA no longer runs down the street
of Bullneck Road.
Eddie’s supermarket has long since gone,
but a congregation still meets
at Christ the King Church…
where l attended mass on Sundays,
and made my Saturday confessions
to Father Walsh...
''in the name of the father, the son, and the holy ghost''

lt’s been years since l’ve been home...
sweet memories abound
of tall oak trees
and the Chesapeake Bay,
where neighbor greeted neighbor
and l was a child,
on Bullneck Road

ln loving remembrance of my hometown
