Being Best Friends

You wish me joy
when others caution, 'Careful!'

You want for me
the best life has to give.

Your arms are always welcoming
for comfort;

when I'm slack
you automatically forgive.

As kids...
you didn't care I was a have-not;

you shared all that you had
and went without.

Old ladies now,
we reminisce and giggle;

isn't that
what being best friends is about?

For Kay,
best friends since 1955
and forever.

We had a girl's club,
called it the 'cat club'
and were supposed
to wear a cat mask.
