The Poet's Dream

Writing a book of poetry
is ambition to every poet,
like a shared magnificent dream,
dropping sighs but trying not to show it;
a need to believe one's words are worthy.
Rose upon perfect rose, courting peers' opinions,
petal after perfect petal, seeking mere brass gongs
down the grand canyon
and wishing to convey a phrase resplendant,
waiting for an inside edge to reach the sky,
for that famous publisher's request,
the eagerly expressed desire to spread your words,
echo upon generous echo of a most endearing figure.

Quote: Don Marquis.
