Oldies Karaoke Night
It’s oldies karaoke night
at the Dew Drop Inn
were I’ll be singing Bobby Rydell
We’ll draw for the longest
straw between us
to see who gets to sing
Frankie Avalon’s “Venus”.
A ghostly smile from Freddy Cannon,
in the dark,
seals his approval of our rendition
of “Palisades Park”.
After another glass of courage from
the bar tender
we belt out like The Platters,
“I’m the great pretender”.
Susie now channels Little Peggy March
and Leslie Gore
while the crowd sings along and
cries out for more.
Little Anthony & the Imperials provide
a beat that won’t stop
with the classic sing along
“Shimmy Shimmy Ko-Ko Bop”.
Is it possible that these heroes of
yesteryear can hear
and understand that their timeless music
we love and revere.
Don’t tell me that your vocal chords
lock up from fright
we want to hear your warbling on the next
oldies karaoke night.
