Empty Nest

As parents go, he has a heart of stone,
he will not buy his little girl a phone.
Though she may throw a tantrum not so sweet,
yell a lot, stamping her tiny feet.
He doesn't worry much, just gives a groan,
As parents go, he has a heart of stone.

As parents go, he has a heart of stone,
a few more years of this and she'll have grown.
He shrugs his shoulders, sighs and shakes his head,
wishing he'd stayed a bachelor instead.
How long (he thought) before she'll buy her own?
As parents go, he has a heart of stone

As parents go, he has a heart of stone.
Will he be sorry when he's all alone?
The bathroom free of all that girlie stuff,
the toilet how he wants it...good enough?
How sad, how sad, when the last chick has flown.
As parents go, he has a heart of stone.

Form: Envelope Couplet
The envelope couplet is generally not considered
to be a stand alone form in and of itself, but as a
means of writing incorporated into another form,
such as a sonnet.
The envelope couplet is a form of sestet (six-line stanza)
in which the first and last line of the sestet are
a repeating refrain, repeated in each stanza you use.
As it is also a grouping of three couplets, this leaves only
the rhyme scheme of the inner couplet (lines 3 & 4) to
change. Therefore, the rhyme scheme would be:
A. a. b. b. a. A.... A.a. c. c. a. A.... A.a. d. d. a. A....
and so on. The capital A. representing the repeating refrain.
